The Governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress for Ekiti state in the forthcoming election, Kayode Fayemi has begun to intensify preparations ahead of the July elections.

The former Governor of Ekiti state and current minister of steel and mineral resources is set to lock horns with the People’s Democratic party candidate, Prof Kolapo Olusola, who is also the anointed candidate by the incumbent Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Although the first APC primary was marked by violence and inconclusive a rescheduled primary gave Fayemi the mandate

As part of the numerous strategy meetings, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Bisi Akande and other APC Stelwarts were caught on camera meeting Dr Fayemi. This may prove Tinubu has put his differences aside with Fayemi who is known to have insulted him on several occasions.

The July 14 elections would definitely be a battle between “federal might”, “local might” and the will of the people.

State Congresses: Tension In APC - Politics

$
0
0
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been gripped by tension as the ruling party holds its state congresses across the country tomorrow.

While a few state chapters of the party have already harmonized positions to ensure that the exercise is hitch-free, it is anxiety in most states as the various blocs and factions battle to control the party’s structure.

The state congresses will elect officials who will run the affairs of the party in states for the next four years. Among states that will be battleground are IMO, Lagos, Rivers, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Benue, Ondo, Kogi and Taraba. Crises have trailed the ward and local government congresses in these states and there are no signs that tomorrow’s state congress would be an exception.

In Lagos for example, it is a fierce battle among loyalists of the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for the chairmanship of the party. Already, six members of the party have declared interests to replace the outgoing chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale.

They are former Head of Service in the state, Dr. Sunny Ajoseh; former members of the Senate, Tokunbo Afikuyomi and Ganiyu Solomon; a grassroots politician, Alhaji Mutiu Are; former Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Tunde Balogun and the incumbent Vice Chairman (Lagos West APC), Chief Funso Ologunde.

A party source, who confirmed the list to New Telegraph, yesterday, said the party leaders were divided over who would emerge as Ajomale’s successor and that is why none of the aspirants has been unanimously endorsed ahead of the Congress.

He said though members of the new executive would emerge through consensus arrangement, leaders of the party in the state were yet to decide as at yesterday, who would be chairman among the aspirants. But he hinted that the chairman may likely emerge from Lagos Central senatorial district.

His words: “Though the chairmanship race seems to have been narrowed down to people from Lagos Central, only Tinubu can decide who will be the chairman among the aspirants.

Nobody can predict what Tinubu will do because all the aspirants are close to him and he may decide to back anyone of them for the position.” Also speaking to New Telegraph, a member of the State Working Committee (SWC), said: “A lot of people are showing interest, but it is only those who collected forms that we know are contesting.

Nobody can say this is the person who is going to be the next chairman because the calculation may change at the last minute.

In fact, some members of the present executive are not even sure whether they will return or not. So, we are all looking forward to Saturday to know the next executives.” In Taraba, there was a call yesterday for the state congress to be postponed.

The Secretary of one of the factions in the state chapter of the party (Unity Forum), Mr. Aaron Artimas, who made the call, said that at least six local government areas might have their ward congresses cancelled as a result of massive irregularities that marred local government congresses. He listed the councils to include Ibi, Donga, Lau, Takum, and Ussa and added that the ward congress in seven out of the 10 wards in Jalingo Local Government Area also stand the risk of cancellation.

“Some aspirants came in with desperation and were willing to do whatever it took to have their persons on the delegates’ lists.

That is why we had a situation where the duly assigned returning officers would collect materials and these would be snatched from them by hoodlums hired by desperate politicians,” he said.

Artimas accused the party leadership of not playing fair and taking sides with the Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan, against other aspirants.

He said: “Some of the aspirants have lost electoral value to a great extent and they felt the only way to succeed was to rig. Unfortunately, the current party leadership in the state is not being fair to all.

They have taken sides with Senator Aisha Alhassan, who has promised to return them to their offices. And we believe that she is being used by some political interests in the state to destabilise the party ahead of 2019 general elections in the state.

”It would be recalled that most governors of the party had seized the opportunity of the May 5 and 12 ward and local government congresses to affirm their grip on structures at the grassroots. Results of both exercises also show that most senators and ministers lost control of the party’s structure in their respective wards and councils.

It was, however, mixed fortunes for the governors of Imo and Benue states, Rochas Okorocha and Samuel Ortom, who lost to opposing camps in their respective states. In states under the control of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) such as Rivers and Akwa Ibom, political appointees like ministers and heads of agencies of governments and parastatals held sway.

Among senators who had poor outing in the ward and local government congresses were Senators Shehu Sani, (Kaduna Central), Suleiman Hunkuyi (Kaduna North), Ajay Boroffice (Ondo North), Solomon Adeola (Lagos West), Magnus Abe (Rivers South East), Nafiz Gamawa (Bauchi North), Rabiu Kwankwaso, (Kano Central), Lanre Tejuosho (Ogun Central), Yele Omogunwa (Ondo South), David Umaru (Niger East), Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) and Kabiru Marafa (Zamfara Central). The ministers are Chief Audu Ogbeh (Agriculture), Babatunde Fashola (Power, Works and Housing), Abubakar Malami (Justice) and Geoffrey Onyeama (Foreign Affairs).

Meghan and her mother, both wearing high heels, arrive at the hotel on the National Trust's Cliveden Estate
Meghan Markle said she is feeling "wonderful" on the eve of her wedding to Prince Harry.
As she arrived with her mother Doria Ragland at the luxury Cliveden House Hotel after meeting the Queen for afternoon tea, the actress was beaming as she posed for photos with her mother before being greeted by the hotel general manager.

Prince Harry and the Duke of Cambridge earlier met their adoring fans outside Windsor Castle, with just hours to go until Meghan and Harry tie the knot.
Harry, looking relaxed wearing an open-necked white shirt and light jacket, waved to the crowds and chatted to his brother before making a beeline to talk to a young girl waiting among the crowds outside.

He shook hands with dozens of well-wishers. Flanked by his best man, William, the pair chatted and joked with those gathered outside the castle.
At one point Harry was handed a small teddy bear wearing a red sweater, which he gave a quick hug before moving on to speak to a young boy sporting a red, white and blue crown-style hat.
When asked how he was feeling, Harry, replied: "Great."
Earlier today it was confirmed that Prince Charles will walk Meghan down the aisle on Saturday, not her mother, who had been the bookies' favourite.

Kensington Palace said Meghan had asked the Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle at Windsor. The statement added: “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to  welcome Ms Markle to The Royal  Family in this way.”
The decision came after days of speculation over who would perform the task. Traditionally it is the bride’s father who “gives her away”.

All Chile's 34 Bishops Offer Resignation To Pope Over Sex Abuse Scandals

In an unprecedented move, all Chile’s bishops offered to resign en masse on Friday after attending a crisis meeting this week with Pope Francis about the cover-up of sexual abuse in the south American nation.

It is the first time that all the senior Roman Catholic prelates of a country have taken such a step, a Vatican official said, underscoring the damage being wreaked on the church by seemingly never-ending clerical abuse scandals.

It was not immediately clear if the pope would accept all or any of the resignations of the 34 bishops, and a Vatican official declined to speculate on when he might make a decision.

“We have put our positions in the hands of the Holy Father and will leave it to him to decide freely for each of us,” the bishops said in a joint statement read out by a spokesman for them, Bishop Fernando Ramos.

The announcement followed four days of discussions in the Vatican, where the pope accused the bishops of “grave negligence” in investigating allegations that children had been abused and saying evidence of s*x crimes had been destroyed.

Apologizing to the victims, the pope and to Chile for the failings of Chile’s churchmen, Ramos said the bishops would all stay in their roles until Francis had decided what to do.

Victims of the abuse welcomed news the bishops were ready to stand down. “This will change things forever,” Juan Carlos Cruz, one of three Chilean victims invited by the pope to see him in Rome earlier this month, wrote on Twitter.

José Andrés Murillo, another of the victims invited to see the pope, said Francis should accept all the resignations.

“They did not know how to protect the weakest, exposed them to abuses and then prevented justice,” he wrote on Twitter. “That’s why they all deserve to go.”

“EVIL”

The scandal revolves around Father Fernando Karadima, who was found guilty in a Vatican investigation in 2011 of abusing boys in Santiago in the 1970s and 1980s. Now 87 and living in a nursing home in Chile, he has always denied any wrongdoing.

Victims accused Bishop Juan Barros of having witnessed the abuse but doing nothing to stop it. Barros, who was one of those who offered to stand down, has denied the allegations.

Friday’s mass resignations came just four months after the pope had visited Chile in a trip that raised questions over his response to abuse scandals that have rocked the church over the past 17 years and his willingness to deal with the crisis.

During the visit, Pope Francis staunchly defended Barros, denouncing accusations against him as “slander”.

But days after returning to Rome, the pope, citing new information, sent sexual abuse investigator Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta to Chile to speak to victims, witnesses and other church members.

Some of his findings were included in a damning 10-page document that was presented to the bishops this week, according to Chile’s T13 television, which obtained a leaked copy. A source in the Vatican confirmed the report was genuine.

In it, the pope said he felt “shame” over the pressure put on people not to carry out full investigations into what had happened, saying some churchmen had been afraid to face their responsibilities and confront “the ramifications of evil”.

“We are all involved, myself in first place, and no one can be exempted by looking to shift the problem onto the backs of others,” the pope wrote.

From The Archive(s); The Otokoto Money Ritual Killings Of 1996

On 19th September 1996, during the regime of late General Sani Abacha’s, in the city of Owerri – Imo, an innocent 11-year-old boy named Anthony Ikechukwu Okoronkwo was murdered for Ritual.
The little boy was hawking boiled groundnuts, which was his daily routine.
He strolled along, selling his groundnuts for peanuts to whoever wanted to buy.
When he got to Amakohia area of Owerri, his eyes lit up with joy when a customer beckoned on him to approach.

That ‘customer’ was named Innocent Ekeanyanwu, aged 32.
The boy was called into the famous Otokoto Hotel and the little groundnut seller was visibly very excited since it was a hotel, it meant that the new ‘customer’ would probably be buying plenty groundnuts which will mean more money to take home to make his parents happy and assist his struggling family.
While waiting, the boy was treated like a guest, he was given a bottle of Coca-Cola to cool off from the punishing heat of tropical Africa.
Innocently, he took the Coke and gulped it with relish.
As he was sipping his soft drink and taking a look at the glittering surrounding of the hotel, he could have imagined having a hotel of his own too later in the future. As he was dreaming, his vision became blurry and the sounds around him became muzzled and dull.

In a matter of minutes, he dozed off, never to wake up again. His tray full of groundnuts was lying in a corner.

Observing the boy from a safe distance was the man who had called him to buy his groundnuts. He had spiked the boy’s drink and once he saw he was asleep, he took the limp body of the drugged lad into one of the hotel rooms and what followed next remains one of the most evil things anyone can ever dream up.
A sharp cutlass emerged from nowhere and the boy’s head was severed from his body. He was beheaded in a matter of minutes. After the boy’s head was cut off, he disembowel his torso, removed his liver and other parts he needed.
Not done yet, the boy’s genitals were not spared as well.
After butchering the boy, and sorted out the organs, he packed his head inside a polythene bag and buried his remains.
The Butcher, Ekeanyanwu then took the polythene bag containing the boy’s head and headed for the next destination: to the house of the man who needed the fresh head. The man who is behind it all.

HOW DID THE INFORMATION LEAK OUT:
After the grisly murder of the little Okoronkwo by Mr. Innocent Ekeanyanwu (what a name, innocent indeed), he left the hotel to deliver the head where it was needed. He then Stopped a Bike man (Okada rider) to convey him to the place.
It was the Okada man named Opara, whom he stopped to take him to his destination in Eziama that realized that was his passenger was carrying inside a polythene bag was a fresh human head. It was still dripping with blood.
When he alighted, the Okada man quickly alerted the police.
The Police then intercepted Ekeanyanwu on his way back in a Peugeot 504 car, he was carrying the head with him in the polythene bag.
He was going to the residence of a highly-influential figure named Chief Leonard Unaogu at Eziama, Ikeduru Local Council Area with the head, but upon arriving, he was told Mr. Unaogu had gone to Lagos. So Ekeanyanwu had no other option but to return to Owerri with the boy’s head.
When it was time to take the headless body of Ikechukwu to the local mortuary, there was a massive procession and protested by Owerri people. People came out in 1000s to protest the boys ritual killing. They stayed around and within the hotel premises, waited for the police to confirm that it was indeed a ritual murder.
While more were matching and trooping to the scene of the ritual Murder as the news was spreading. It was in the midst of this tension that the local media station made its miscalculation. They showed the image of Innocent Ekeanyanwu holding the head of his victim.
The goal of the media was to assure the people, assuage public fear, ask the public to help identify the boy and show official transparency but what followed next was a catastrophe.
All hell broke loose as the enraged people of Owerri went haywire after the image was first broadcast on the 24th of September.
All Owerri residents abandoned their businesses and congregated at the town’s central marketplace. It was there they decided on the next plan of action and outlined their strategies to deal with the Otokoto ‘headhunters’.

The news spread rapidly, every home in Owerri had hear news or seen the image of Okoronkwo’s head or his shallow grave.
Unemployed and disgruntled youths took over the parks and issued threats to the Owerri millionaires.
From the Owerri main market, the riots exploded and spread.
The pattern of destruction was neat. The rampaging crowd first went to the morgue and from there, they rushed to the Otokoto Hotel and burnt it to the ground.
From there, they went to the nearby palatial mansion of Chief Vincent Duru and destroyed his property, his expensive cars were wrecked and Duru himself narrowly escaped.
From there, the crowd split into attack groups and spread out to other sites of the priviledged elite and unleashed maximum destruction.
The well-known Piano Plaza and Stores, alongside another hotel, Chibet Hotel, and various businesses linked to the Otokoto and their associates were utterly destroyed.
The Zubairu-led government later confiscated all the property as recommended by the panel which was headed by Justice PC Onumajuru.
From there, they rushed to the palace of the traditional ruler and chairman of the state council of traditional rulers, Eze Onu Egwu Nwoke (later indicted alongside Aneke and Abure by the panel of inquiry) and burnt down his residence and his petrol station, they also destroyed the king’s 15 airconditioners and many of his cars.
They were not done yet, from there, the crowd ‘troops’ headed for the residences of former Imo State officials.
These administrators were targeted because of what was described as ‘their alleged unwillingness to properly tackle several cases of ritual murder, kidnapping and robbery while in office.’
The angry rioters only agreed to calm down when the military administrator (MILAD), assured them that a full, state-level investigation of the incident was going to be launched.
Ekeanyanwu, who murdered the boy, was aged 32 and he worked as a gardener inside the Otokoto Hotel.
THE OTOKOTO HOTEL
At the time of its existence, Otokoto Hotel was located in an upscale area of Owerri, specifically the Amakohia side, and it was a favourite location for the rich and wealthy youths to meet, drink and have all manners of fun.
Duru’s hotel was made up of three buildings, (3,5 & 6 Stories each, one behind the other).
It was owned by Chief Vincent Duru, the father of Obidiozor Duru, the leader of the Black Scorpions secret cult that was responsible for robberies and kidnapping of children in the state.
BACKGROUND TO THE STORY
Before this horrible incident, the people of Owerri were already very mad at the bizarre actions of some loud, extremely powerful and obscenely wealthy individuals in the state. These people were highly-connected and oppressed everyone where they went.
Rumours were all over the place as to their very dark dealings and even the possibility of ritual murders and killings but no one really had any hard evidence yet or probably those who had it were too jittery to say anything.
Whatever the case, these rich people who had no really tangible or easily traceable sources of wealth kept on living large and instilling an atmosphere of terror and fear on the Owerri populace.
This was how Owerri was described at that time: When the people heard of what happened inside the hotel to the boy, Owerri exploded with anger and resentment that had been piling up for years.
For two straight days, the people of Owerri trooped out in their thousands, protesting and rioting.
Not even the strong-arm tactics of the Imo State military administrator,Colonel Tanko Zubair, could stop them (the administration of the former military governor Navy Captain James Aneke was already seen as corrupt,419-based and even complicit in the protection of the Otokoto men.
They simply ran amok and the national and international media focused on the Owerri riots of 24th and 25th of September, 1996, also known as the Otokoto riots, the people felt they had had more than enough.
Any property suspected to belong to the ’Otokoto men’ were set ablaze, from posh hotels to luxury supermarkets, their flashy automobiles, palatial mansions, everything was destroyed and burnt to the ground.
Any suspected member of the Otokoto gang was lynched.
Prior to the riots, the youthful members of the Otokoto gang & other secret societies (believed to be offshoots of campus secret cults) involved in ritual killings went everywhere oppressing others with their ill-gotten wealth making other hardworking youths look clueless & silly.
The Owerri public had no faith in the police and as a matter of fact, the commissioner of police at that time, David Abure, was seen as the personification of corruption who wined and dined with the evil ones.
THE INVESTIGATION
Following the arrest of Ekeanyanwu,he was remanded in police custody while awaiting trial. But while he was in the police custody, magic happened,he was killed by food poisoning 4days after.
He killed the boy on Thursday and by Sunday morning, he was found Dead.
But luckily for the interrogators, before he was killed,Ekeanyanwu confessed and mentioned Leonard Unaogu as the brain behind the ritual killing syndicate.
He confessed that the ritual killing ring was a well-organized machine that specialized in the harvesting of human body parts.
and sold them to those interested in using them for rituals and all the usual nonsense they claimed to be using them for. He also said it was Unaogu who ordered him to get a human head.
Reports has it that the Otokoto saga had been in place as far back as 1976.
Confessional statements revealed that no one was spared at the Otokoto Hotel. Innocent guests and unsuspecting travellers who lodged at the hotel were drugged or attacked in the middle of their sleep and hacked to death after which they were cut into pieces for sale.
Police officers who swooped on the hotel discovered not only the shallow grave containing that of the little boy but also graves containing other victims with their decomposing and dismembered corpses.
No one knows the exact exhumed at Otokoto Hotel was up to 24 bodies.
Some were buried at inconspicuous locations such as under the flowerbeds. Such evil, such horror!
The man that Ekeanyanwu mentioned before he was poisoned to death, Leonard Unaogu, was a business tycoon.
And he was the junior brother, Laz Unaogu, a serving minister under Abacha.
Leonard Unaogu was eventually arrested by the police.
When the police arrested Unaogu, he lied with a straight face that he never knew anyone called Innocent Ekeanyanwu and that he was not even in Owerri when the crime was committed, saying he was in Laos.
THE TRIAL AND JUDGEMENT:
Trial started on the 9th of December, 1996 with Hillary Ngozi Opara as the first prosecution witness.
Nine people testified before Justice S.O Ekpe, who took over from Justice Gabriel Ojiako, the retired chief judge of Imo State, during the trial.
The court also admitted the confessional statement of Innocent Ekeanyanwu.
Margaret Acholonu a receptionist of the hotel stated that two spots were dug at the hotel premises and it was from the second one that the body of Okoronkwo was exhumed.
She also implicated Chief Duru.
She also said that on that fateful day, she saw Ekeanyanwu with a black bag and he told her he was going to his village at Eziama
A sergeant Sunday Onwucheka, told the court he was in the office when Ekeanyanwu was arrested with a fresh human head of the innocent boy.
According to Onwucheka, before the police took Ekeanyanwu to Otokoto Hotel, the crime scene, he confessed to killing the boy at Mba River in Ikeduru and dumped the body inside the river. The police followed the false trail but found nothing at the Mba River.
So at about 7:00 pm on the 20th of September, they returned to Owerri. The following Monday, they continued with their investigation and took him to Otokoto Hotel where the headless body of the boy had already been identified before the police team arrived.
On 20th August 1997, a senior magistrate court in Owerri docked 9 police officers.
For the murder of Ekeanyanwu.
They were:
Ifeanyi Anozie, an assistant commissioner of police
Chukwu Obasi, an assistant superintendent of police
Kevin Ezirim
Christian Nnazi
Clifford Odiaka
Felix Nnorom
Christopher Aguobi
Ignatius Igwe
James Ibezere
Josephat Nwosu
The case snailed on till 14th October, 1997, over a year, and after series of adjournments, absence of lawyers,Presiding judge, suspects or even the retirement of judges or their transfer etc
When the case Finally resumed, many were pissed off. Leonard Unaogu, the minister’s brother, was transported in a new station wagon from the prison to the court like a royalty.
Vincent Duru and other suspects were brought in a Black Maria from prison to the court, with handcuffs.
Duru protested the preferential treatment given to Unaogu.

Many judges handled the case.
First, it was Gabriel Ojiaku, then Simeon Ekpe who was almost done with the prosecution until he was elevated to Court of Appeal.
Then finally on 28th April 1999, Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme.
Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme Judgment:
She Sentenced All the seven suspects to death, they were:
Chief Vincent Duru, the owner of the Otokoto Hotel and Unaogu denied knowing each other, but Justice Nwosu-Iheme said that was a lie.
He appealed the sentence in 2012 but he was unlucky as the sentence was upheld by the Appeal Cou
Leonard Unaogu: He would later die some years ago at the Port Harcourt Prisons in what has been described as very mysterious circumstances.
BLACK SCORPION SECRETE CULT:
After judgment, the convicts all moved to the Port Harcourt Prisons in the middle of February, 2003 pending their execution.
Prior to the case of Okoronkwo, several children had disappeared in Owerri, never to be found till date.
Some were kidnapped and their wealthy parents will pay ransom. It was so serious that in May 1995,the daughter of Dr. Okoh, a Physician in the city was kidnapped by the Black Scorpions, one of the elite secret cult, asked the doctor to pay $12000 before the girl Will be released.
Eventually, the police stormed the hideout of the Black Scorpions and months later, the leader of the cult, Obidiozor Duru (who happens to also be the son of Chief Vincent Duru, owner of the Otokoto Hotel) and Amanze Onuoha, were both arrested.
They were brought before the Imo State Robbery and Firearms Tribunal on the charges of armed robbery, capital offence.
Businessman and politician Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was also mentioned in the saga but he denied ever knowing anything about the case.
what happened next was nothing but a mockery of justice.
Duru and Onuoha were treated like royalties in the prisoner rather than criminals awaiting the death penalty.
They got the most liberal visiting privileges, ate food cooked and brought from their homes. They were like lords and Duru (a Ph.D holder in psychology from California State University) even impregnated one of his female Jailers and did a ‘traditional wedding’ with her before he completed his case.
And while they were incarcerated, the rate of child kidnappings in Imo dropped drastically.
In 1997, six people were executed by a firing squad following a judgement by Justice Emmanuel Nnodim.
One of those killed was Obidiozor, the son of Chief Vincent Duru, leader of Black Scorpion Cult.
WHERE IS OTOKO (Vincent Duru) NOW?:
Chief Vincent Duru(alias Otokoto) one of the men convicted in the celebrated case of the ritual murder of September 19, 1996 in Owerri, Imo State, was reportedly hanged.
His execution took place on Sunday, November 13, 2016.
This was 13 years after his 2003 conviction.
This was after government approved the execution warrant.
For His Properties:
During the administration of Ikedi Ohakim as governor, he tried to revoke the right of occupancy of the police to the confiscated Otokoto properties but people were said to have kicked against it.
The Duru family was also said to have approached Governor Rochas Okorocha over the confiscated property saying the property belonged to the Otokoto Group and not Duru. Okorocha stylishly brushed the matter aside.
Each time the issue of returning the confiscated property to the Otokoto family, Owerri people rise and protests.
CONCLUSION:
Nigeria is still in the grips of ritual killers, almost two decades after the Otokoto saga. The same factors that gave birth to the 1996 Otokoto ritual killings are still in place today: poverty, irrational beliefs in supernatural powers that lead people to believe money can be made from flesh without doing any work, weak/corrupt law enforcement agencies and a super-slow judicial system.
The presence of these factors explains why after bloody Otokoto saga, the country still had to face the Okija/Ogwugwu shrine saga in Anambra State and the Soka forest horror of Oyo State.
The Nigerian disease is still there – yet to be healed.
We must put a stop to the growing menace of “Get Rich Quick” Syndrome pervading our society today.
Otokoto happened in as far back as1996 when most of the young men and women involved in “Yahoo-Yahoo, Yahoo Plus, Ritual Money etc, were not even born then.
Funny enough, all those who involves in Human Ritual Killings, do NOT end well. because ‘THE DEVIL HAS NO FREE GIFT’.
So Youths, becareful
Say NO to Blood money
Say NO to Human Ritual Killing
Say NO to Kidnapping
Say NO to short-cut to Wealth
God bless U All

22 Years After, Supreme Court Acquits Otokoto Suspect

The Supreme Court on Friday discharged and acquitted, Alban Ajaegbu, one of the accused in the celebrated case of the ritual killing of an 11-year-old boy, Ikechukuwu Okoronkwo, in 1996 in Owerri, Imo.

The killing of the boy, a hawker, jolted Owerri, stoking riot and destructions by enraged residents that lasted for days in the city.

In her lead judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun held that the circumstantial evidence relied on to convict and sentence the appellant by the lower courts was not sufficient.

“It must be restated here that the appellant was charged with murder and the prosecution has the burden of proving beyond reasonable doubt that it was the act of the appellant that caused the death of the deceased.

“The appellant does not have the burden to prove his innocence. The lower court held that the defence of the appellant raised a lot of suspicions.

“The law is well settled that suspicion, no matter how grave, cannot take the place of proof.”

She said that the assumption of the lower courts that because the appellant worked in the hotel for 17 years, he should have known who owned the farm that Okoronkwo was buried in, was wrong.

“Suspicion cannot take the place of legal proof. That the appellant worked in the hotel for 17 years and didn’t know who owned the farm cannot make him guilty.

“The law is settled, that an accused person told lies does not make him guilty.”

The apex court held that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court, therefore, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Owerri of 2012, which upheld the death sentence of the trial court and acquitted and discharged Ajaegbo.

The judgment was read by Justice Ejembi Eko, and the other four justices on the panel agreed with the judgment.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Okoronkwo, a groundnut seller, was on Sept. 19, 1996, lured into a hotel, called Otokoko in Owerri and beheaded.

Okoronko was reportedly given a bottle of Coca-Cola that had been spiked with drug before he was killed.

The hotel was owned by one Vincent Duru, who became known as Chief Otokoto during the long trial, following his not guilty plea after his arrest and arraignment.

Besides beheading Okoronkwo, the suspects, who were seven in number reportedly, removed different organs from his body, including his genitals before burying the corpse in a shallow grave.

The crime was discovered when 32-year-old Innocent Ekeanyanwu, left the hotel to deliver the head in a polythene bag to a client.

An Okada rider, who gave Ekeanyanwu a ride discovered the fresh human head and alerted the police, leading to the arrest of Ekeanyanwu.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, has stated that police officers must first surrender themselves to be searched before they search Nigerians, revealing that this is the “procedure.”

Idris said this yesterday during an interactive session with Nigerians on Twitter, through the hashtag #AskThePolice.

“If an officer wants to search you in your house/car, he must first surrender himself for searching. This is the procedure. Ask politely,” he said in response to a question.

When asked if it is legal for police officers to search people’s phones without a warrant, the IGP said: “It is not ideal for Officers to search your phones without a complaint. It is not professional.

“Officers have been lectured not to unnecessarily search people’s phones without any case or complaint against the person.”

The atmosphere was gloomy and it was obvious that a lot of tears had cascaded down the cheeks of the family members of the late Aishat Abimbola aka Omoge Campus whose sudden death occurred on Tuesday. Although the actress had since relocated to Canada last year probably on health grounds, sympathisers thronged her family house, 32 Fuja Street, off Randle Avenue, Surulere Lagos on Tuesday when Saturday Beats visited. The house hosted some of her association members such as Saidi Balogun, Kola Olaiya, Dele Fagboro, Sukannmi Omobolanle to mention but few who came to mourn her demise.

It was gathered that the late actress died after battling an illness which was speculated to be breast cancer in Canada. Saturday Beatsgathered that the late actress had been nursing the ailment and had to relocate to Canada about a year ago.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, her elder brother, Taiwo, described the actress as their all. He said that her death came as a shock to the family.

He said, “We were all born and raised in Idumota, Lagos. We lost our parents years back and she had assumed the role of the breadwinner of the family. Aishat is a great personality in our family and we always prayed for her because she was indeed the pillar of support that our household had. Before her death; she was someone who never joked with her family members and siblings at all. She was our mother and father and all. She will sorely be missed.”

Her younger sister, Mariam who is the last child of the Musa family could not stop screaming in shock over the death of her late sister, who she described as a rare gem to the family.

Meanwhile, the actress, who was fondly referred to as Omoge Campus, was buried on Thursday in Canada, where she passed away.

The information was made available by her boss and president of The Golden Movie Ambassadors of Nigeria, Saidi Balogun via his Instagram handle.

She was laid to rest at the Meadowvale Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Centre, Brampton, Canada amidst tears. It was gathered that the burial was coordinated by her colleague, Lola Alao who reportedly took care of her during her illness.

Prior to the burial of the late actress, her friend and colleague, Lola Alao took to her Instagram page to plead with well-meaning fans of the deceased not to contribute money for her burial.

She said, “Hello everybody I would like to say thank you for all the calls and support after Aisha’s death. I am very grateful for the support and may God bless and support everyone. Aisha had been battling cancer for a very long time but being a private person, she did not share the information with anybody especially because she did not want to beg for money from anyone. Please if anyone claims that I sent a broadcast message seeking for fund for the burial, it is false. We never begged for money and I am speaking on behalf of Aisha’s family. We do not need anybody’s support because Aisha is a Canadian citizen and the Canadian government took up the responsibility of burying her. Please if you receive any information that we need money, kindly disregard such a message,” Alao said.

Royal wedding: Harry and Meghan exchange rings as they marry at St George's Chapel
Meghan Markle has married Prince Harry in a moving and modern service that saw the newlyweds sharing tears, laughter and a passionate kiss in front of their thousands of adoring guests (main picture). Harry looked delighted as he walked his new wife out of St George's Chapel (right) but had been visibly emotional when he saw his bride for the first time in her simple but beautiful pure white dress and then grabbed his bride's hand and told her: 'You look amazing - I missed you'. He also said 'thank you, pa' after his father Prince Charles walked her down the aisle.

But the tears turned to laughter when the star made him giggle as they exchanged vows before being pronounced man and wife by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby as millions watched around the world. And on the steps of the chapel Meghan asked her new husband discreetly: 'Do we kiss?' and Harry whispered 'yeah' before planting one passionately on her lips. Celebrity royalty including the Clooneys, the Beckhams, Idris Elba, Elton John and Oprah Winfrey watched them marry. Britain's royals including the Queen and Prince Philip were also there to support them.

Meghan Markle has launched her own mini-revolution as she married Prince Harry today in a multi-cultural and US-influenced wedding the likes of which Britain's royals and the millions watching have never seen before.

The newlyweds shared tears, laughter and a passionate kiss in front of their hundreds of VIP guests dominated by Hollywood stars including the Clooneys, the Beckhams, Idris Elba, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hardy and James Corden.

Elton John, who sang at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997, performed at the lunchtime reception hosted by the Queen in a poignant nod to Harry's late mother.

All the senior British royals were also there to support the couple including Her Majesty, Prince Philip, Harry's best man Prince William and his wife Kate, who brought George and Charlotte but left baby Louis with the nanny.

Today Meghan became the first mixed-race member of the royal family in an extraordinary journey for a girl born in LA to a white father and African-American mother who fought her way through the tough world of showbusiness to land a plum role in the TV series Suits.

Harry and Meghan's big day couldn't have been more different than royal weddings of the past, especially because the prince was visibly emotional throughout - and guests suggested it was the most diverse major event in the Queen's 66-year reign.

The prince had looked tearful when he saw his bride for the first time, grabbing her hand telling her: 'You look amazing - I missed you' before tenderly lifting her veil.

The new Duke of Sussex also said 'thank you, pa' after his father Prince Charles walked the now Duchess of Sussex down the aisle of St George's Chapel, Windsor, having stepped in at the last moment for Meghan's father Thomas.

The former actress, 36, managed to make a tearful Harry giggle as they exchanged vows before being pronounced man and wife by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Despite being an Anglican church service it had a distinctly American feel with a US bishop delivering a passionate address that appeared to make some royals snigger and a gospel choir filling the chapel with music from Ben E. King and Etta James.

But there was also much of the great British pageantry that royal fans around the world love - all set in the fairy tale surroundings of Windsor Castle on a stunning May spring day.

Meghan chose acclaimed British designer, Clare Waight Keller - the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy - to design her dress. She also wore a Queen Mary diamond bandeau tiara, loaned to her by the Queen.
