Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has finally lost appointment as Ambassador-at-large of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) for not meeting up with the necessary protocols demanded of the office.

In a letter issued and signed by the head of the Nigerian Office, Dr. Friday Sani which was made available to DAILY POST in Abuja on Thursday, Dr Saraki was not forthcoming despite several meetings with officials of the International agency.

The letter further indicated that the lawmaker had been put on prior notice by the Nigerian Central Office and Africa of IHRC in which he was properly briefed, regretting that the withdrawal of nomination became necessary in line with the protocols of the agency.

Part of the letter reads: “In view of the recent event towards the perfection of the intended decoration and the overall interest of the organization in Africa and the world, we hereby withdraw your nomination as Ambassador-at-large.”

The letter added that the International Human Rights Commission’s World Secretary-General, Mr. Rafal Marcin Wasik has been informed of the development.

DAILY POST reports last week that Dr. Bukola Saraki was on the verge of losing the international appointment as Ambassador-at-large.

To lead a diplomatic mission as Ambassador-at-large of the IHRC, Saraki would have to be officially decorated by the Secretary-General of the agency, a development that has been elusive since the appointment in March, 2019.

Cardi B returns to court in pink suit and sky-high stilettos after rejecting plea deal
Cardi B didn't seem too concerned about her court appearance as she strolled in, more than three hours late, in a low-cut power suit and sky-high heels.

Dressed in an all-pink ensemble, the 'Press' rapper strutted her way into the Queens Criminal Court in New York City on Friday.

The entertainer wore a $4790 pink Salvatore Ferragamo pantsuit and sparkling pink fingernails to Friday's hearing. Her jet-black tresses flowed effortlessly down to her waist.

She accessorized with fierce hot-pink Christian Louboutin stilettos, worth around $700, and a taupe-colored Chanel bag which costs $7300.

Her cleavage was practically busting out of top of her pantsuit
Prior to her arrival to court, the rapper posted an Instagram live video where her fans got a unique view on the singer thanks to her plunging outfit.

She also posted a video with her new song.

'My face got maaaa fat, she said in the post caption. 'Anyways PRESS PRESS PRESS.'

And as she headed through security, a fan reportedly asked: 'Is this what you meant by no press?'

Cardi B shrugged at the Press reference, Page Six reports.

During her court appearance, however, the 'Bodak Yellow' rapper did not speak. She is scheduled to appear back in court on August 9.

Prosecutors have also said that they would like to present the case to a grand jury after 'further investigation.'

The conditions of her parole were continued, including an order of protection for the complainants.

Fans followed Cardi B out of the courtroom on Friday, trying to get photos. She hugged a woman who appeared to be an acquaintance but did not speak to anyone else.

Cardi B - whose birth name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar - decided not to plead guilty to misdemeanor assault to the third degree in connection to claims that she ordered the attack of two bartenders at a New York strip club.
Cardi would not have had to do any jail time by accepting the deal.
The case would have also been completely dismissed if she had met certain conditions, The Blast reports.
Cardi faces a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment and assault for the August 2018 incident at the Angel's Strip Club in Queens.
Sisters Baddie Gi and Jade, who work as bartenders at the strip club, claimed the rapper ordered an attack on the women because she believed one of them had an affair with her husband Offset.
The sisters alleged that a member of Cardi B's entourage threw bottles, chairs, and hookahs in the club at them.
Cardi was allegedly caught on camera tossing an ice bucket at the women. The songstress surrendered to police in October.

Cardi B's court appearance came just a day after the rapper made another Instagram Live to defend her cosmetic work.
'I do whatever the f*** I want to do with my body, I don't have the time of day like you do.
'My job as an entertainer is a 24-hour job, bro. So no, I don't have time to work out. I wanted specific things that I know that no matter how much I work out won't get fixed.'
Cardi went on to explain that the recent surgery on her breasts is her doctor's main concern, and revealed that some of her stitches are yet to heal.
Her doctor warned her she needs to take time off like he told her to. 'My breasts gotta f**kin heal,' she added.
Cardi continued her video leaving her fans in no doubt that cash is her main motivation.
'I hate cancelling shows because I love money. I'm a money addict. I get paid a lot of money, a lot of money for these shows. A lot of money. I'm cancelling millions of dollars in shows, but health is wealth so I have to do what I have to do,' she said.

Appeal Court Orders Forfeiture Of N1.4bn Obtained By Company Linked To Saraki

The Court of Appeal in Lagos, on Friday okayed the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the final forfeiture of N1.4billion which a firm, Melrose General Services Limited, obtained from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) through false claims.

Melrose is allegedly linked to outgoing Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, whose two aides- Gbenga Makanjuola and Kolawole Shittu are being prosecuted by the EFCC in respect of the matter.

Justice Cecilia Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos had on April 27, 2018 ordered the final forfeiture of the said N1.4billion to the Federal Government.

Dissatisfied with the verdict of Justice Olatoregun, Melrose General Services approached the appellate court for redress, asking it to set aside the pronouncement of the lower court.

But in its judgement on the matter on Friday, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of Melrose (the appellant) and resolved the four contentious issues in favour of the EFCC (the first respondent).

The appellate court further held that Melrose appeal lacked merit and ordered the firm to pay 100,000 cost to the EFCC.

The appellate court also held that Melrose could not show that the said funds were lawfully earned by it.

It added that section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud Act, 2006, which the EFCC relied on to seek for the forfeiture of the said funds was constitutional.

According to the Court of Appeal, Melrose was not denied fair hearing in the matter.

Justice of the Court of Appeal (JCA), Justice Tijjani Abubakar wrote the lead judgement, Justice E. Tobi delivered the judgment while Justice O. A. Obaseki-Adejumo concurred with the verdict.

Lawyer to the Melrose, Mr Olawale Akoni (SAN) argued the appeal while the lawyer to the EFCC, Mr Ekele Iheanacho, appeared for the Commission.

The EFCC had claimed that Melrose obtained N3.5bn from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum by making false claims.

Listed as defendants in the final forfeiture application filed before the Federal High Court were Melrose General Services Limited, WASP Networks Limited and Thebe Wellness Services.

The firms were accused of impersonating a consortium of consulting firms engaged by the NGF for the “verification, reconciliation and recovery of over-deductions on Paris and London Club Loans on the accounts of states and local governments between 1995 and 2002.”

But the EFCC insisted that the original firms engaged by the Governors’ Forum were GSCL Consulting and Bizplus Consulting Services Limited.‎

Usman Zakari, the alter ego of Melrose General Services Limited, Robert Mbonu, made a false representation to the Governors’ Forum, causing the forum to pay N3.5bn to his company on December 14, 2016.

Zakari said the money was credited into the Access Bank account of Melrose General Services Limited, adding that Melrose and others dissipated and laundered about N2.3bn out of the money between December 15, 2016, and January 20, 2017, leaving a balance of N1.2bn.

Zakari said the anti-graft agency had also recovered N220m out of the laundered sum from WASP Networks Limited and Thebe Wellness Services.

The EFCC had on October 13, 2017 obtained an interim order from Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, placing a “Post No Debit” order on the accounts containing the N1.2bn and N220m.

The Judge had made the order following plea by the lawyer to the EFCC, Mr Ekene Iheanacho, that it would best serve the interest of justice for Melrose and others to forfeit the N1.4bn temporarily to prevent them from dissipating same.

The Judge, after granting the interim freezing order in 2018, directed the EFCC to publish the order in a national daily giving anyone interested in the funds 14 days to appear before the court to show cause why the funds should not be forfeited permanently.

Subsequently, one Prince Godwin Maduka and Linas International Limited showed up before the court, praying separately that the funds should be forfeited to them.

Maduka claimed that his firm, Udemgaba Maduka & Associates, had been engaged in 2011 as a consultant by Zamfara State Government to help the state recover some hanging funds, with an agreement that it would be paid 20 per cent of the recovered funds.

He urged the court to forfeit the N1.4bn to his company to cover Zamfara State’s alleged indebtedness to him.

But the EFCC opposed Maduka, contending that the suit was not a debt recovery suit and that Zamfara State was not a party to the suit.

In her verdict on the matter, Justice Olatoregun upheld the EFCC’s argument and dismissed Maduka’s claims.

On its own part, Linas International Limited said it was entitled to the payment of $6m from Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

But Justice Olatoregun also dismissed its claim, holding that the suit was not a debt recovery suit.

Having dismissed both claims, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of the N1.4bn to the Federal Government.

Stepdad of missing 4-year-old girl ?confesses to killing her by accident?
The stepfather of a four-year-old girl who went missing one month ago has confessed to accidentally killing her.
The suspect, Derion Vence allegedly made his confession on Friday to Quanell X, a community activist who was representing the victim, Maleah Davis' mother. He confessed he killed Maleah before dumping her body in Arkansas.

Quanell X also revealed that a plane will fly from Houston, Texas, where Maleah vanished, to the spot in Arkansas where Vence allegedly said he dumped her body.

'What happened to Maleah was an accident. He says it was an accident. And he confessed to me where he dumped her body.
'He was very specific with the amount of distance and time. When I was able to leave and look it up on my phone, he was to the point on the distance and time.
He said that he pulled over in Arkansas, got out of the car, walked to the side of the road, and dumped the body off the road,' Quanell told The Houston Chronicle.

Stepdad of missing 4-year-old girl ?confesses to killing her by accident?

He said he had met with the directorate of Equusearch, which works with the police in missing persons cases, to find her.

'I think it's true enough that I have an airplane lined up at 3 p.m. to fly a detective, and several officers to go up there and go ahead and start the search.'

The alleged confession comes nearly a month after Vence reported Maleah missing on May 4.
The little girl was last seen alive following Vence into their home in Houston on April 30. He reported her missing on May 4, and said she had been abducted by three men the day before while he drove to pick up Maleah's mother Brittany Bowens' from George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Bowens claims to have been attending her father’s funeral in Massachusetts around the time her daughter vanished.

Vence claimed he was knocked out by Maleah’s abductors, and woke up 24 hours later in a field. He also claimed that his family’s silver Nissan Maxima was stolen.

Police later found traces of blood linked to Maleah in his home, sparking fears he killed and dismembered the youngster. The forensic evidence was used to arrest Vence and hold him in jail on suspicion of tampering with a corpse.

Quanell X, also speculated that Vence may have killed Maleah to get revenge on Bowens for ending their engagement.

'No Igbo President, No Nigeria' - Elder Statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo

Elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has come hard on politicians from other regions angling to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

In this interview, granted recently, the Afenifere leader, said for peace to reign in Nigeria, the Southeast should produce the next president of the country. According to him, unless the nation goes back to true federalism, Nigeria is headed towards a breakup.

What is your view on the allegation made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that plans were underway to ‘Fulanise’ and ‘Islamise’ Nigeria and West Africa?

I have been talking about it before, and some people said that I was talking non- sense. When he was in power, he encouraged them to have Sharia. I have been saying it, and I even accused the vice president that, as a pastor, he is serving a government that is Islamising the country, and he came out to say that it was not true, and that the government wasn’t Islamising the country.

All over the country, we have been on it for a long time. When they started around Southern Kaduna, we made the point; there were Christian elements. When they murdered about 800 Christians there on Christmas day, what did the authorities do about it? The vice president was sent there at that time, as the president wasn’t around, and he ordered the military to go there to prevent another attack, but the following day they were attacked again and villages were wiped out, what happened? Not a single arrest was made.

Then they went down to Agatu and other places, and there have been several church- es being burnt in northern Nigeria. So, why are they denying the obvious? Why are we denying the obvious in Nigeria, and just pretending?

Are all these things happening by accident? They kidnapped Catholic bishops, they kidnapped ministers, kidnapped professors, etc. You pressmen, you published all these things, what other evidence do you want?

Somebody is not beefing up security after several harms have been done, where does he want to rule as commander-in-chief? When we say they are Fulani herdsmen, he says they are outsiders. If they are outsiders, does it mean that you cannot protect us from outside invasion, what is your army for? Are you not the commander-in-chief?; Are you not there to protect lives and property? Soldiers, you draft them for external aggression, while police for internal aggression. What has happened to all these?

Few years ago, the international body declared these Fulani herdsmen as terrorists, but you say no.

Obasanjo said the obvious; he just joined some of us who have been calling attention to it. He is a latecomer to the call. Obasanjo is a latecomer in arousing the country on this dangerous trend; I have been talking about it before and he didn’t lend his voice, or was he waiting till all the Christians are wiped off before he would talk?

Look at the problem of the country today; up till now, all the security chiefs are still in place, and they have proved themselves to be most inefficient. His security chiefs are efficient when it comes to attacking the opposition. We are talking about security now, but their spokesman, Lai Mohammed is talking about having evidence that the opposition and Atiku want to disrupt the government.

Their security is never efficient in detect- ing outsiders who are coming to kill people; their security is never efficient in preventing herdsmen from killing people, wiping out villages, raping women and abducting people. The security of Buhari and government is not all that efficient, but when it comes to detecting people who want to topple the government, then they are most efficient; they are just pretending, they are preparing the ground to arrest opposition members on flimsy reasons.

They are talking of people wanting to disrupt the government, is that not a diversion when the country is facing serious se- curity problem? You have not come up with programmes to solve the security problem, but you are talking of the government being disturbed. Why will it not be disturbed when you are not doing your work?

What the people now say about the government is that it is incompetent. The churches, everybody is complaining about the insecurity and you don’t come out with possible programme, telling the people and giving them assurance, you are only talking about those who want to topple you. Do you see how irresponsible and insensitive they are? It is very unfortunate. Your security men are so efficient that they have evidence of the people who want to topple you, but they don’t have evidence of the killing, rap- ing and abduction of people in all parts of the country. The security officers are so inefficient, and are still there. May God save Nigeria.

The North is insisting on keeping pow- er in 2023, what is your view?

They don’t want to rule, they want to dominate. It is not a question of democracy; Buhari by birth is a feudalist and by train- ing is a dictator, and I have given evidence of that before he was voted in 2015. When I gave all the evidence for his dictatorial tendencies that he is not a democrat, and he doesn’t obey the rule of law, I was accused then of whipping up sentiments against him when he was a military officer, but now, it doesn’t follow because he is a civilian. How far I have been proved right or wrong, the rest is history.

I know this Buhari, there is no quarrel between him and I, and I have repeated all over again that Afenifere, where I belonged, campaigned for him in 2011, and he has not refuted it. It was on the ground that he was going to restructure the country to true federalism. I say it publicly, let him deny this, by then Pastor Tunde Bakare was his run- ning mate.

Even the APC he is in now, they are so deceitful, they talked about restructuring and when they came to power they didn’t believe in it and claimed not to know the meaning or understand it. They set up El- Rufai committee on restructuring and the report was produced and they set it aside.

What are you telling me? This is why I said he cannot be trusted, and now he is talking about the type of true federalism, what type of talk is that when Jonathan handed over to him the 2014 confab report? Is it not there, and he said he would not touch it even with a long stick.

I was coming to this. When Buhari mentioned true federalism as the way to go, is it in line with your aspiration?

I don’t believe him until he puts it into action. The federalism we know is the one known all over the world, as America, Australia and others practice it. Its dictates and the principles are the same. It is prac- ticed according to the locality of the nation whether it is ten states, five states, etc.

When we tell people that we should go back to the Independence Constitution, they ask, are we going back to the three or four regions? No, the principle there is the type that Zik, Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello had at that time, which made Awolowo to be able to give free education. If it is going to be on three, four or 10 states that is another matter.

Go back to the constitution we had at independence. Go back to history, when there was crisis, when Chief Anthony Enahoro moved for self-government, Northern leaders led by Sardauna said they were not ready to go. The West withdrew and said without self-government, they were not going to take part. The colonial masters invit- ed the leaders to come for a meeting and the government then collapsed. This is a matter of history. That is when they accepted federalism and they came back to create pre- miership in all the regions with autonomy. Every region at that time had the same constitution. Under that constitution, they had embassies abroad. The Western Nigeria embassy in London was where I got mar- ried in 1960. That is the constitution we had until 1966, when the military imposed this constitution on us. This is nonsense. The constitution we have was not subjected to any referendum, and it doesn’t take a long way to do it. Take the 2014 constitution, and if there is anything you object about it, take it out and if there is anything you want, put it in and subject it to referendum.

They resort to subterfuge that there is constitution, which constitution? You want to tie us down with the constitution we have jettisoned that is not ours?

Can’t the man for once be serious about Nigeria? If he is serious about peace, if he is serious about keeping this country together without violence, though he just wants to keep us together by force, he should go immediately to restructure the country on true federalism then there will be peace, and he would go down in history as the maker of the new Nigeria, but if he continues like this, he is the destroyer of Nigeria.

The more Buhari and his party hesitate to create true federalism immediately, the more they go down as destroyers of Nigeria.

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, in an interview recently asked the Southeast to forget about 2023 presidency, what is your position on this?

This is just the propaganda we are talking about. The Southwest has said it is for them, and we have been hearing things like this long ago.

First, the constitution, before any other thing must be revisited, and if the president doesn’t do that, this country will break up. Let us get constitution first, not to continue with this injustice.

Why is IPOB saying they want to break away? Because they said they were not included.

The West has been president, the South-South has been president and the North has been president, while the Southeast has not, but you want peace.

I don’t believe any region or any section is to be given the presidency on sufferance; you are not doing anybody any favour, the constitution we are asking for is for anybody to become president constitutionally as applied, not out of sufferance or favour that you vote for me. Is that why and how we were amalgamated, is that the condition for our unity? Absolute nonsense and deceit!

Those of them they are deceiving are deceiving themselves. The North doesn’t want to leave power. There are sensible people in the North, even among the Fulani. We are talking about unity, peace in the country, and you are talking of people wanting to disturb you, is that the immediate thing, while the economy is going down? There is no progress until the constitution is rectified. Senator Sola Adeyeye came down with the problem of this constitution and told them that until we change it, there can be no peace and there can be no progress. What is the problem? If there is any change this country needs now it is the change of this nebulous constitution that is imposed on us by the military.

Assuming the presidency comes to Southwest, between Tinubu and Osin- bajo, who would you consider?

I don’t buy into this propaganda. It is dishonest and invidious for anybody to be talking of the presidency coming to the Southwest, then you are not serious about keeping the country together. For unity, for peace and equity how would you exclude, Southeast, a part of the country from the highest position of the country, as if it is not a part of the country?

Are we dominating or overruling them? We have to be together in peace and in unity. All those who are gathering because they want to be president in 2023 are cheats and dishonest people, and they are deceiv- ing themselves by trying to keep us to be disunited, so that they come to rule again, and say because we don’t agree. I don’t beg anybody to give me presidency, but give me the right constitution.

It will be stupid of any Easterner to be thinking of joining Buhari or APC so that they can be president, or any Westerner for that matter to be stupid and foolish enough to be welcoming the idea he can be president in 2023. Arrant nonsense. That won’t be fair. How can you deny the presidency to a unit of the federation when we are equal partners? Is there sense in that? That is the question we should ask ourselves if we are honest in this country.

That is why I say, let us have a constitution, which will guide us. We don’t want to be ruled by the favour of a section of the country, that is, you are my friend, and I give you your right. It will not happen, but if it comes to that, everybody will go to his father’s land. There is no doubt about that. We can’t be forced together and be ruling the units of the horse as the rider; they are the rider and we are the horse. No unit will accept it.

NASS Leadership: Presidency Lobbies PDP Caucus For Lawan

Follwoing the swearing in of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, May 29 for a second term in office, the race for the leadership of the National Assembly has intensified, as the federal lawmakers prepare for the proclamation of the 9th Assembly and their inauguration, as well as choosing their leaders thereafter.
Politics and intrigues regarding the emergence of the President of the 9th Senate recorded a new twist yesterday as the Presidency openly indicated interest in approaching the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Solomon Ita Enang, a former senator himself, who represented the Presidency at the open declaration of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (PDP, Delta North) for Lawan, was full of thanks to the lawmaker, saying: “I thank you for the support, you are welcome.”
Ita-Enang, in a warm embrace with Nwaoboshi, declared: “It was equally learnt that a former president of the Senate had before yesterday asked some PDP lawmakers still loyal to him to support Lawan’s aspiration.
“Another PDP lawmaker known to have openly supported Lawan is the former interior minister, Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), who at a strategic meeting in Abuja, disclosed that he was working for Lawan.
“During his own declaration for Lawan at the National Assembly, yesterday, Nwaoboshi, who just got his election to the Senate re-validated by the Appeal Court, announced that the PDP had no candidate for the Senate Presidency and its leadership would not direct its elected senators to vote for any particular candidate for the position of the 9th Senate President.
According to him, the best the PDP leadership would do is to give the elected members of the incoming senate the direction to follow, but not to necessarily impose a candidate on them.
He said: “The PDP has not taken a decision, as a political party, as far as the presiding officers of the 9th Senate is concerned. Our party has not also told us the candidate we should vote for.
“I know the PDP leaders will not say this is the candidate they want; they would only give us a guideline. I also have a right, as the representative of my people, to determine what is good for the Anioma people.
“I am a loyal PDP man. I have not left the PDP and it is not part of my agenda to do. However, regarding the leadership of the 9th Senate, I know my people would be happy with my choice of Lawan. My people know what they benefitted from the support I gave the incumbent Senate President.
“I can make a choice on my people’s behalf, because I have lived among them over the years.”
Nwaoboshi dismissed insinuations that his challenger at the Appeal Court, Ned Nwoko, would present the Certificate of Return issued to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be inaugurated as senator on June 11, saying: “Once the election has been declared and the Certificate of Return issued to the winner, it is only the highest court in the land that can order the withdrawal of the certificate.
“I have my Certificate of Return; nobody has withdrawn it. What was issued to Nwoko was a piece of paper and not a Certificate of Return. I was the one that contested the election, having defeated him in the primaries.”
For the Speaker of the House of Representatives, one of the aspirants, Olajide Olatubosun, has explained that his bid was in line with the rule of law, faulting the notion that he was in the race to play the spoil role for Femi Gbajabiamila, the preferred choice of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said: “As a member of the House that is duly elected by my people, Section 50, sub- section (1 b) says the members shall elect from among themselves. So, constitutionally, I have that right to contest. For me, democracy gives you the opportunity to make choices from where you can take your decisions, so, the more the merrier.
“On whether I will spoil the chances of the Southwest, it is absolutely not so. It is left for my colleagues in the House to decide whom they want to vote for. It won’t spike the chances of my zone at all.”
Olatubosun, representing Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West Federal Constituency of Oyo State on the APC platform, said he has not faced any form of harassment or intimidation from anybody for defying the party’s position on its preferred choice, noting: “Nobody can harass me or intimidate me. On what basis? Is it that I am not qualified to run? Even if the APC has a preferred choice, that doesn’t exclude other members from contesting.”
Meanwhile, the Northern Youth Council (NYC) has thrown its weight behind the aspirations of a newly-elected member of the House, Emeka Nwajiuba, of the Accord Party (AP), representing Ehimembano-Ihette-Uboma and Obowo Federal Constituency of Imo State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NYC’s National President, Mallam Yahaya Salisu, described the lawmaker as a detribalised and patriotic Nigerian, who is ready to work with Buhari’s vision to take Nigeria to the next level.
He stated: “The need to get it right this time around, for the smooth running of the affairs of government, as we go into yet another term of four years mandate given to Buhari and the 9th National Assembly by the Nigerian people, is what informed this our support.”
Salisu argued that it would be fair and just to allow the Southeast geopolitical zone, where Nwajiuba hails from, to produce the Speaker of the House, adding: “The Northwest has produced the President. The Southwest has produced the Vice President. For equity, justice and fair representation, the Southeast should be given the Speaker of the House and in that zone, Nwajiuba deserves to be in the position, due to his vast experience and educational qualification as a PhD holder.”
Meanwhile, the camp of Gbajabiamila, who is the frontrunner for the Speakership race, is not leaving anything to chances, as it has continued to reach out to clerics, traditional leaders and the 36 states governors, irrespective of party affiliation.
A member of the campaign team, who pleaded anonymity, however, expressed optimism that Gbajabiamila would surely triumph, saying: “We have the numbers. We are sure of winning, but we don’t want to take chances, like in 2015, when we were laid-back.
“You can see things yourself, as we are going round the country to talk to those that matter to swing the votes in our direction.”
Among those angling for the speakership of the House are Nkeiruka Onyejiocha, Mohammed Umar Bago and John Dyegh.

Drop Box Visa Applicants Say U.S. Is Revoking And Cancelling Valid Visas Of Nigerians

Mrs Ibidapo, who did not want her real name used so as not to antagonize U.S. embassy officials, said her visa was abruptly revoked by the United States Embassy in Lagos, for no reason after she was invited to the embassy and told to come with her valid US Visa. ” I  have been crying every day with no-one ready to tell me why my visa was revoked, I have never overstayed in the US  and was there last year,  without any incident, she said. She is not alone.

The number of Nigerians having such visas revoked by the US embassy in Nigeria has risen sharply in the past months. Dozens of Nigerians with valid visas trying to obtain a new visa for a spouse, parents or a family member, said the visa applications were denied,  and theirs revoked for no reason. Majority of Dropbox applicants who are exempted from visa interview during renewal are now being asked to come for an interview with most of them being denied a visa.

The Interview Waiver Program (IWP), ‘Drop Box’ introduced many years ago in Nigeria,  allows certain Nigerian U.S. visa applicants who are applying to renew a visa in the same class of a visa previously issued by a Consulate/Embassy in Lagos or Abuja, to be considered for a waiver of the visa interview requirement. In response to Per Second News query about the issue, a U.S State Department Official in Washington, said ” The U.S. Mission to Nigeria has not cancelled the interview waiver process or drop box.’

” When we receive derogatory information that indicates potential visa ineligibility, we take immediate actions such as entering the information in U.S. government databases and revoking visas if appropriate, the official said. With regard to revocations, the official from the Bureau of Consular Affairs told this newspaper that Section 222(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) prohibits the United States from discussing individual visa cases.

“The Department has broad authority, under Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, to revoke visas based on information that comes to light at any time indicating that a visa holder may be inadmissible to the United States or otherwise ineligible for a visa. ” A traveller to the United States from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos said he was routinely stopped by Nigerian immigration officials and after series of interrogations told he would not be allowed to travel, except he provides a letter from the US Consulate.

The traveller said he went to the embassy to complain and he was giving an appointment:  “All she asked to look at was my passport,” he said, referring to the US consular official.  “She asked me about two questions, walked away, and returned saying my visa had been revoked. She never gave me a reason why.” ” I was dumbfounded and angry, till date no reason has been given. Agatha was a holder of a two-year multiple visitor visa issued to her in 2017. Since its issuance, Agatha would visit her relatives in Colorado.

This year, in June, Agatha is preparing to attend the graduation of her nephew, who is graduating from the Penn State University in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, last month, she claimed she received a notice from the US Embassy Consular Section informing her that her visitor visa is already revoked. She is being asked to go to the US Embassy so they can physically revoke the visa. One of those letters sent to this newspaper by a woman whose visa was cancelled reads:

“New information became available after the visa was issued so that we must re-evaluate your eligibility for the visa. Therefore, you will need to re-apply for a visa and the officer will determine your eligibility at that time. ” The Department of State through the consular officers is given authority to issue visas to foreign nationals.

They are also afforded the discretion to revoke and cancel visas after they have been issued, said an Immigration Attorney based in Nebraska. “The visa holder’s request for reconsideration of the revocation has been eliminated in 2011 regulations. It also allows the consular officer to revoke the visa without notice if it is “impracticable” to notify the visa holder. Douglas Ellice, the former Border Security Specialist at US Department of Homeland Security (2003-2014), said,” It sometimes happens that it is discovered AFTER a visa is put into a traveller’s passport that the person is ineligible for the visa and ought not to have received it.

An effort will be made, often unsuccessfully, to contact the person before they fly to the USA and ask them to return to the embassy for physical cancellation of the visa.” ” DHS data systems will quickly know of the issuance and revocation. If the traveller attempts entry into the USA they will probably be denied admission and sent home, Ellice said. Per Second News findings indicate that consular officers are given the authority to revoke visas immediately while considering facts determining grounds for ineligibility.  This is called the “provisional revocation.”

Generally, a notice of revocation shall be provided to the visa holder but only “if practicable.” This means that even if the visa holder is not yet notified, his visa may be considered revoked provisionally. Whether or not the visa holder is notified, once the revocation is entered into the State Department’s Consular Lookout and Support System (CLASS), the visa is no longer valid for travel. Femi Olaniyi travelled to Los Angeles on February 21 with a two-year multiple entry visa. He says the experience proved to be an ordeal.

“When I got to the point of entry at Los Angeles Airport, an immigration officer interrogated me.” “He said I should come for biometric (tests) to check whether I have any criminal offence. I told him that I’m not a criminal and that he should go ahead.” Each year it has become increasingly complicated to obtain visas for some people who are truly deserving. Fraudulent applications, as well as abuse in the use of nonimmigrant visas, are the reason for the stricter regulations. In a video released last week by Per Second News, Canadian Immigration officials said a large number of Nigerians who enter the U.S., on tourism visas do end up applying for asylum in Canada through the land border they share with the U.S.   Diplomatic cables sent during the reign of former Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson to all American embassies instructed consular officials to broadly increase scrutiny.

The directives asked American embassies and consulates around the world to identify certain groups that should get extra scrutiny when they apply for visas. This directive also instructs U.S. posts overseas to review the social media accounts of visa applicants, even if the applicant otherwise qualifies for a visa, those identified as meeting the criteria would require additional scrutiny and possible denial. Nigeria’s economic and political crisis has spurred one of the largest migration flows in history. The result has been a massive exodus of Nigerians to Libya, Ghana, South Africa, China, India, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, EU nations and many more. Independent groups estimate that 1 million to 2 million Nigerians have fled the country in recent years.

The 8th Nigerian Senate under Bukola Saraki is expected to wind down its constitutional duties today paving way for the inauguration of the 9th Senate on June 11.

Mr Saraki emerged Senate President during his days in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) against the wish of the party and was deputised by Ike Ekweremadu from the opposing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The emergence of the top lawmaker to lead the legislative arm of government was largely seen as an attempt to thwart the aim of some political godfathers in the ruling party who wanted to install a stooge.

Several efforts to oust him from his position often met brick walls with the Senate President atimes outsmarting his opponents.

The Kwara lawmaker who later defected to the PDP enjoyed the support of his colleagues despite their political differences and this could be said to be responsible for his stay in office until the expiration of his tenure.

The PDP Director-General in this year’s presidential election will not be returning to the 9th Senate because he lost his re-election bid.

The Senate under Saraki has at different occasions clashed with the executive arm of government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari has often blamed the National Assembly as responsible for his administration’s inability to deliver on some of its campaign promises, policies and programmes.

One Thursday morning, one of the aides of the Senate President, Olu Onemola, on Twitter described the tenure of his principal at the red chamber as an impact-filled, productive and responsive one in the country’s history.

This has led to reactions from Nigerians on the micro-blogging site with hashtag #8thSenateValedictory.

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has issued a query to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II over alleged financial misappropriation.

Information indicates that the query was issued on Wednesday by the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) on behalf of Mr Ganduje.

The query comes days after Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission recommended Sanusi’s suspension.

The commission alleged that over N3.4 billion was misappropriated under Kano Emirate which is overseen by Sanusi.

It also alleged that the said amount was misappropriated between 2014 and 2017.

Ganduje and Sanusi had on Tuesday shook hands and shared laughs at the Eid praying ground to mark Eid-el-Fitr.

The government of Kano together with a band of religious leaders and some political elders meeting in the ancient city have resolved to depose Muhammadu Sanusi ll, as Emir of Kano, an official disclosed today under the condition of anonymity. The official said in a telephone message that the Emir was confronted by some of his actions which includes an allegation of misappropriating the Emirate Council’s N3.4 billion. “The governor has been under great pressure for the last six months and will find it difficult to decline now,” the official added.

Kano Governor Ganduje Governor Ganduje Thursday cancelled an annual city parade by the emir in a move targeted at Emir Sanusi. The procession in the northern town of Kano, a symbolic march celebrating the power of the monarch, held to mark the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan, had been due to take place on Thursday.

The traditional march usually sees the emir pay tribute to the governor while on horseback. It also includes a tour of the city with residents lining the streets, beating drums, playing the drums and firing muskets. Emir Sanusi II is the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I, the 11th emir of Kano who was deposed in 1963 after a disagreement with Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and premier of the northern area on the time.

Munir Sanusi, chief of staff to Muhammadu Sanusi, the emir of Kano, says the emirate council is studying the content of the query issued to the monarch.

The office of the secretary to the state government (SSG) had issued a query to Sanusi on behalf of Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of the state.

The chief of staff confirmed the receipt of the letter, saying the emir was asked to respond within 24 hours.

“We received the query today (Thursday). The state government has demanded the response of His Highness within 24 hours. The council is studying the content,” he told.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission had recommended the suspension of the emir after probing the emirate.

The agency said it uncovered that N3.4 billion was misspent under Sanusi. The amount was said to have been misappropriated between 2014 and 2017.

The government of Ganduje had earlier broken the emirate into five, stripping Sanusi of the control of 34 local government areas.

Ganduje is believed to be getting back at Sanusi who reportedly worked against his reelection.

The governor had denied the allegation, saying his actions were in the interest of the people.

An aspirant for the President of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has warned that the independence of the Ninth National Assembly may be under threat.

He called on lawmakers to work to protect its independence to avoid turbulent sessions.

Ndume also singled out Senator Dino Melaye and apologised to him “if I offended you during my stay in the Eight Senate.”

Ndume, representing Borno South in the upper legislative chamber, noted that the only thing every parliament has going for it is its independence which it must guard zealously.

The lawmaker said this while contributing to the valedictory session to mark the end of legislative business for the Eight Senate on Thursday.

The Borno born politician said that the difference between democracy and military government is the independence of parliament.

Ndume said, “We had loads of disagreements. I respect your resilience and your ability to stand for what you believe in. We started together and we were doing fine. What happened was part of the learning process.

“My concern is the independence of this arm of government. That is not to say we must not work with the other side (Presidency).

“I see a dangerous thing coming. The only thing that makes democracy different from the military rule is the Parliament. We need to ensure the independence of the Parliament.

“If we take away the Parliament, what we have is not democracy. I am one of those that were controversial in the last four years. Within the process, we may have offended one another. I take nothing personal.

“This institution is very important. Let us protect the sanctity of the parliament. This is the Nigerian Senate. There is no APC or PDP Senate. This is the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We will continue to support the other side but we must work at all times to protect the sanctity of the institution of the parliament. We must continue to enhance the sanctity of the Senate at all times.”

The controversies surrounding the choice of Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, seems unending, even as the June 11 inauguration is just a few days away.

Reports indicate that Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader of the outgoing 8th House, is the anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Speakership position.

Protesters
Having come from the Southwest geopolitical zone, Gbajabiamila is believed to be favoured by his political godfather, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also from the West and ranks as a National Leader of the APC.

Lately, individual bodies, pressure groups and political parties including the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), had instituted several charges against the lawmaker over alleged $25,000 fraud and other corruption cases.

Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila

Gbajabiamila has been accused of frauds in the United States, particularly in Georgia. The CUPP has also alleged Gbaja to be an ex-convict who ran away to Nigeria after serving his jail term in America.

Gbajabiamila, a lawyer by profession, is alleged to have defrauded his client during his stay abroad. Although his accusers had disclosed that the lawmaker had paid back the monies, they are however seeking a court order to compel Gbaja from contesting for the speakership position.

Just recently, a case challenging his ambition was struck out from the court, on the grounds that “it lacked merit.”

In a clip obtained exclusively by Igbere TV on Friday, some Nigerians in the diaspora, stormed the Nigeria Consulate Office in Atlanta Georgia, United States of America.

The leader of the group, who narrated the demonstration, said: “This protest is a clear indication that the people are not happy with one of the individuals (Gbaja) being sponsored for the position of the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives.”

The protesters armed with placards with various inscriptions, are demanding that “President Muhammadu Buhari should not play politics with the Speakership position.”

They are asking the president to “stay away from National Assembly affairs”, among others.

Some of their placards read, “Gbaja is corrupt”, “Buhari stay away from legislative activities”, “Femi is not honourable, he cannot be speaker”, “Gbaja is not a a good choice, we need a competent speaker”, “We don’t want thieves in our government”, “Stop the disgrace.”

The protesters alleged that Hon. Gbajabiamila has questionable past from his days as a resident of Georgia.

Specifically, the protesters said: “Let us recall that in 2003, a client sought for and engaged the legal services of Femi Gbajabiamila in a case where the client sought to sue (a third party) for damages. Gbaja’s client won the case and a total sum of $25,000 US dollars was paid as cost of injury into the trust account held in the name of Femi Gbajabiamila, on behalf of his client.

“Femi stole the $25,000 meant for his client and fled to Nigeria. He was subsequently arraigned for theft and professional misconduct before the Supreme Court of Georgia, where he pleaded guilty, and was accordingly, convicted.”

In a separate disciplinary suit filed before the Supreme Court of Georgia with charge no: 806Y0629, obtained exclusively by Igbere TV, “Femi’s disciplinary action was unanimously decided by all Justices of the Supreme Court, on February 26, 2007.”

According to the document, the case was, subsequently, reported in 281 Georgia, 659 Georgia, 2007; and 641SE2D532, as published in the United States of America Law Report.

But Gbajabiamila has denied the allegation that he was convicted by a court in the United States of America.

Similarly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) told Igbere TV that it was not aware of any case against Gbajabiamila in the US or whether the lawmaker lied in his oath form, as being alleged.

Gbajabiamila has threatened to take legal action against the CUPP over the accusations.

As the debate over his alleged conviction in the United States continues, all eyes are on the ruling party and Gbaja’s godfather, Bola Tinubu to issue statements. But none of the two parties have either affirmed or defended the anointed speakership candidate.
